Matthias Schönweger meets Peter Mitterhofer: Anniversary Exhibition of the Artist at the Typewriter Museum in Partschins
Alongside Peter Mitterhofer, Matthias Schönweger is also a great son of the municipality of Partschins. Like Mitterhofer, he too is seen by many as an outsider, a “maverick,” someone who, like the great inventor of the past, refuses to conform, speaks his mind, and doesn’t shy away from controversy.
Mitterhofer did not live to see the fame he earned as the inventor of the typewriter. In contrast, Matthias Schönweger celebrated his 75th birthday this year as an internationally known and renowned artist. To mark this occasion, the University of Innsbruck and Kunst Meran honored his life’s work with a symposium in April.
In his homage to Peter Mitterhofer, the 2003 novel “von und zu Peter & Paul,” Schönweger highlights his spiritual kinship with the inventor. It was only a matter of time before the artist and the inventor were united under one roof: since August 23rd, 2024, the Typewriter Museum has served as the stage for the multifaceted artist. With his creative approaches as a writer, sculptor, painter, graphic artist, and performance artist, he merges the boundaries between different art forms. Through his exploration of everyday objects, combined with an intelligent play on words steeped in irony and sarcasm, he presents the world as a microcosm, which ultimately becomes a mirror and moral instance of ourselves.
